Inspired by the moment in Virgil's Georgics where the story of Orpheus trying to lead Euridice back from Hades is told. "Iam sub luce" means "now just close to daylight ..." It is at this moment as they are about to emerge into the light of day that Orpheus turns round and Euridice fades back into the shadows.

"Carthago delenda est" means "Carthage must be destroyed" - the words of Cato in the senate which carried the vote and caused the final destruction of the city at the end of the third Punic war. But the title is simply a short hand for the idea which the image evokes for me - the heads bowed and hands outstretched - of all the sackings and razings of maritime cities through all of history.

MICATIO - a popular game played in ancient Rome, still played in modern times in Southern Italy under the name of Morra. 2 players count to 3 and then hold up a number of fingers - anything from 0 to 10 and at the same time shout out what they think will be the total number of fingers held up by both players ie anything from 0 - 20. Another gambling game. Whoever guesses the number right scoops the pool. The numbers of course have to be shouted in Latin.

PAR IMPAR: A popular game in ancient Rome. One player scoops up a number of dry beans in their two hands and the other player has to guess whether the number of beans is odd or even. It is of course a gambling game so if the player guesses right he/she gets to keep the beans and converts them to money. But in the Rome Game version he or she only gets the beans if they can count them all up in Latin. An excellent way of learning numbers in a foreign language.
